放下魚與竿,談談自主和尊嚴吧-公平貿易的社會影響力 2019-02-23 Antonio "Tony" Lantigua, 33, GUIDOM's Fairtrade Certification Officer, smiles outside the worker's association Fairtrade premium committee office. Tony, first employed in 2003 as a banana bunch carrier, has risen within the company and taken advantage of a Fairtrade premium-sponsored scholarship to study law at a local university. He states: "Honestly, the working conditions changed dramatically after the Fairtrade certification came through in 2007. In my case, I could never have been able to get my university law degree without both the economic support and the flexibility I received in my scheduling as I studied in the afternoons and evenings. Currently, roughly 80 young employees are taking advantage of the Fairtrade premium-sponsored scholarships as they realize they can work and study at the same time. Most likely many won't be working here forever, but this program has changed the demographics of our employee population and have kept many youth from migrating - a big problem in our community." GUIDOM is a single-owner banana plantation in northern Dominican Republic that exports bananas certified by the Fairtrade Labelling Organization (FLO). It employs 450 workers from which only 32 are Haitian. As of December 2014, GUIDOM exports 35% of its total production via FLO to Switzerland and England. Once GUIDOM finishes processing its organic certification, it hopes to export 100% of its production as organic bananas via FLO. Hato Nuevo, Mao, Valverde, Dominican Republic.
